"Facelift" Book Review

"FACELIFT"
by
Leanna Ellis

In life and love, we could all stand a few nips and tucks . . .

Kaye Redmond, a "can do" kind of woman, has the magical touch when it comes to staging houses to attract buyers. Her ability to make things "perfect" has served her well in her career. If only it could transform her personal life as well. With a failed marriage, an angry teenage daughter, and an ex-mother-in-law who is no fairy godmother, Kaye's life is about as imperfect as it gets.

But sometimes blessings come in the strangest packages. Like her ex-mother-in-law landing on Kaye's doorstep after a botched facelift. Could caring for the impossible woman help Kaye get what she wants most: her husband back? Isn't that what God would want? And what her daughter needs? But no fairy princess ever faced such obstacles: an ex-husband's surgically enhanced mistress, hormonal teenagers, and--worst of all--an extra handsome prince! How's a woman supposed to find happily-ever-after with all that going on?

MY REVIEW:

What does God really want for our lives? Leanna Ellis delves into this question and many more as she takes us on a wonderful journey with Kaye Redmond to make God's will happen in her life... right? Surely when the marriage vows were made God intended them to be adhered to no matter what. Kaye is convinced that even though her husband cheated on her, left her and divorced her that it is still her destiny to get him back from the bimbo he left her for. Of course in the meantime she has started her own home staging business in order to support her and their teenage daughter and she is finding a strength within herself that she didn't know she had. In everything except where her ex-husband is concerned, so when he calls about his mother needing a place to stay after her botched facelift how can she refuse even though she can't stand the nasty woman. What ensues is a journey of discovery for all involved. What a great journey it is!

"Surrender The Heart" Book Review

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Surrender the Heart
Barbour Publishing (August 1, 2010)

by
M. L. Tyndall

MY REVIEW:
I love M.L. Tyndall's books. The pirates, the buccaneers, the romance, the swashbuckling - ah, the things dreams are made of! M.L. captures all of these elements so beautifully that I get swept away in her books. "Surrender The Heart" centers around the War of 1812, which I find fascinating. The characters of Noah and Marianne are wonderful, first off they are engaged but neither can stand the thought of marrying the other person. Then neither of them is a perfect person, in fact they are both far from it. They both resort to pretty underhanded events in order to get out of marriage to the other person without letting down their families. Things escalate and then intervention in the form of a British ship. Situations get worse from there, but God is in the center of it all, right? Really enjoyed this book, M.L. has done it again... written a book that swept me away!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

M. L. (MaryLu) Tyndall grew up on the beaches of South Florida loving the sea and the warm tropics. But despite the beauty around her, she always felt an ache in her soul--a longing for something more.

After college, she married and moved to California where she had two children and settled into a job at a local computer company. Although she had done everything the world expected, she was still miserable. She hated her job and her marriage was falling apart.

Still searching for purpose, adventure and true love, she spent her late twenties and early thirties doing all the things the world told her would make her happy, and after years, her children suffered, her second marriage suffered, and she was still miserable.

One day, she picked up her old Bible, dusted it off, and began to read. Somewhere in the middle, God opened her hardened heart to see that He was real, that He still loved her, and that He had a purpose for her life, if she'd only give her heart to Him completely.

She had written stories her whole life, but never had the confidence to try and get any of them published. But as God began to change her heart, He also showed her that writing had been His wonderful plan for her all along!

ABOUT THE BOOK

For the sake of her ailing mother, Marianne Denton becomes engaged to Noah Brennin---a merchantman she despises. But as the War of 1812 escalates, Noah's ship is captured by the British, and the ill-matched couple learns vital information that could aid America's cause.

Relive the rich history of the War of 1812 through the eyes of Marianne Denton and Noah Brenin, who both long to please their families but neither one wishes to marry the other. Noah is determined to get his cargo to England before war breaks out, and Marianne is equally determined to have a wedding so that her inheritance can be unlocked and her destitute family saved. When their stubborn games get them captured by a British warship, can they escape and bring liberty to their country—and growing love?

Nancy Moser

MY REVIEW:
This may be my new favorite Nancy Moser historical book. I still love John 3:16 the most but for historicals this book is fantastic. It is like an updated version of the prince and the pauper but it is beautifully crafted and a pure pleasure to read. I actually thought that it might bore me a little since it was similar in tale to an old story, but I was sorely mistaken. It is brilliantly written with incredible characters and I read the entire book in about a day... I just couldn't put it down. Nancy is a master of historical fiction and has proven that time and again. Masquerade just confirms it all over again - absolutely wonderful.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Nancy Moser is the award-winning author of over twenty inspirational novels. Her genres include contemporary stories including John 3:16 and Time Lottery, and historical novels of real women-of-history including Just Jane(Jane Austen) and Washington's Lady (Martha Washington). Her newest historical novel is Masquerade. Nancy and her husband Mark live in the Midwest. She’s earned a degree in architecture, traveled extensively in Europe, and has performed in numerous theaters, symphonies, and choirs. She gives Sister Circle Seminars around the country, helping women identify their gifts as they celebrate their sisterhood. She is a fan of anything antique—humans included. Find out more at

ABOUT THE BOOK

They risk it all for adventure and romance, but find that love only flourishes in truth...

1886, New York City: Charlotte Gleason, a rich heiress from England, escapes a family crisis by traveling to America in order to marry the even wealthier Conrad Tremaine.

She soon decides that an arranged marriage is not for her and persuades her maid, Dora, to take her place. She wants a chance at "real life," even if it means giving up financial security. For Charlotte, it's a risk she's willing to take. What begins as the whim of a spoiled rich girl wanting adventure becomes a test of survival amid poverty beyond Charlotte's blackest nightmares.

As for Dora, it's the chance of a lifetime. She lives a fairy tale complete with gowns, jewels, and lavish mansions--yet is tormented by guilt from the possibility of discovery and the presence of another love that will not die. Is this what her heart truly longs for?

Will their masquerade be discovered? Will one of them have second thoughts? There is no guarantee the switch will work. It's a risk. It's the chance of a lifetime.

"Amish Proverbs" Book Review and Giveaway!

AMISH PROVERBS
Words of Wisdom
from the Simple Life

by
Suzanne Woods Fisher

Whether we call them "maxims," "sayings," or "old saws," proverbs offer little glimpses of insight into folks' values and beliefs. Fisher collects more than 200 Pennsylvania German idioms---simple, profound, serious, and humorous---to uncover the heritage, traditions, faith, history, and essence of the Amish people. An ideal any-occasion gift!

MY REVIEW:
I love Suzanne's book Amish Peace and was excited to read Amish Proverbs. This book is a beautiful work of art that would make a great gift. It is full of gorgeous photos of Amish country and many sites and things you would see there. Then it is filled with words of wisdom, a couple of my favorites...

"You can't stumble when you are on your knees."

"Nothing is quite so annoying as to have someone go right on talking when you are interrupting."

"Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines."

A wonderful book that would be great for just reading a page or two at a time and spending the rest of the day mulling over the words of wisdom.

***********For a chance to win a copy of this great book, leave a comment telling me about your favorite proverb. It doesn't have to be Amish or from the Bible, it could be a saying by Benjamin Franklin or something your grandma always said. Leave your email address and I will do a drawing next Sunday (29th) for a winner - good luck!

This book is now available from Revell publishing. Special thanks to Donna Hausler and Revell publishing for my review copy and a copy to give away.

"His Princess - Girl Talk with God" Book Review

HIS PRINCESS GIRL TALK WITH GOD (Love Letters & Devotions for Young Women) BY SHERI ROSE SHEPHERD

Do the teen girls you know think they're beautiful, smart, special? Probably not! Shepherd's message from their heavenly Father reassures young women of God's devotion to them---no matter who they are, what they look like, or what others say about them. A beautiful gift filled with Scripture, prayers, and the promise of unconditional love.

MY REVIEW:
I actually got this book for my daughter, Sarah (she turned 14 this week). I gave it to her and she just finished the 40 days of devotionals in it. I asked her what she thought and these were her responses...

• I actually understood it.
• The stories each day were true stories about her life, that was cool.
• Each day had a letter to me from God and I knew that she might have typed it but it was things that God wanted me to read.
• The Bible verse each day made a lot of sense to me because they were tied in with that day's story.
• If she wrote another one I would want to get it too.

I also wanted to point out that Sarah read each day's devotion and then posted the Bible verse on her Facebook page. We had a friend of mine tell us that she was following Sarah's daily verses, even though she doesn't go to church she was enjoying seeing what verse Sarah posted each day. I thought that was a great witness to Sarah that little things can make a difference. I was very impressed by how much Sarah enjoyed this devotional book. I'm looking forward to finding more like it for her now that she has shown the dedication to read this one!

This book is now available from Revell publishing. Special thanks to Donna Hausler and Revell publishing for my review copy.

"The Crimson Cipher" Book Review

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

The Crimson Cipher
Summerside Press (July 1, 2010)

by
Susan Page Davis

MY REVIEW:
I have read lots of books concerning WWII, but not nearly as many about WWI. Consequently I was fascinated by "The Crimson Cipher" which deals with sabotage and espionage in America before it entered WWI. I loved the characters that were dealing with murder, mystery and so much more as they tried to uncover danger before it happened. Emma is a strong young woman that is devastated when her father is killed over what seems to be the project he was working on designing - a machine that can encrypt messages and maybe decode them as well. The Navy gets involved and soon Emma is working as a civilian in a secret part of the Navy that is responsible for trying to decipher intercepted messages from the enemy regarding sabotage on American and Canadian soil. In the meantime, somebody wants Emma dead and they want her father's machine.
I loved learning about what was going on before America joined the war. Susan Page Davis has a section that tells which parts are fact and which parts are literary license, it is so interesting. I had never really heard about this before and I would like to learn more. That is an interesting book, something that can grab my attention and hold it and then make me want to learn more. Excellent characters, excellent time period and storyline and a wonderful book all around!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

From Susan: I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. My young adult novel, Sarah's Long Ride, also spotlights horses and the rugged sport of endurance riding, as does the contemporary romance Trail to Justice. I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. The two youngest are still learning at home. Jim recently retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, and we’ve moved from Maine to Kentucky.

ABOUT THE BOOK

IT'S 1915, AND EMMA SHUSTER HAS FAR TOO MUCH ON HER MIND TO ENTERTAIN NOTIONS OF ROMANCE...

A female Navy cryptographer seeks to save lives...and uncover her father’s killers.

In 1915, German sympathizers escalated acts of sabotage in the United States to keep the nation from joining in the war. With enemies lurking at every turn, whom can Emma trust? Is romance the true motive behind her tow suitors advances? Or could one-or both of them-have traitorous intentions in mind?

Following the mysterious murder of Emma Shuster’s father, Lt. John Patterson invites Emma to become a Navy cryptographer because of the expertise she gained in helping her father develop a cipher system.

Emma races to discover the nefarious plans of her country's foes and unmask their leader before others are killed. She finds new strength in her faith as she strives to outwit her adversary, known only as Kobold - German for goblin.

And yet, her greatest challenge may be deciphering the cryptic messages her heart sends whenever she encounters a certain navy lieutenant... Can Emma and John find love in the midst of turmoil as America plunges toward war?

"The Gathering Storm" Book Review

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

The Gathering Storm
Summerside Press (August 1, 2010)

by
Bodie and Brock Thoene

MY REVIEW:
First off, when you want excellent historical fiction on WWII in Europe the Thoene's are the authors to go to. They have outstanding series already (The Zion Chronicles and The Zion Legacy books) and now this new series is filling in the gap between those two series. So we enter Europe in the early 1940's. How do you expound on the writings of the Thoenes? Their research is amazing, their characters are incredible, the settings are so well written that I fell like I'm there... Then there are the story lines. I was telling my husband about this one because I loved that it is the perspective of an American citizen who is stuck on the wrong side of the ocean and is witness to all of these horrible atrocities. The perspective is amazing. I only had one minor issue with this book, there is a legend that is introduced in the story that leads us to believe that the legend is true and it messed with my mind a little (I'll admit it certainly made me think and that's not all bad and I certainly spent a lot of time thinking about it in the days that followed finishing the book!) That was the only thing that seemed a little off to me. Outside of that, this book is another testament to the historical brilliance of Brock and Bodie Thoene.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Bodie and Brock Thoene (pronounced Tay-nee) have written over 50 works of historical fiction. Over twenty million of these best-selling novels are in print. Eight ECPA Gold Medallion Awards affirms what millions of readers have already discovered—the Thoenes are not only master stylists but experts at capturing readers’ minds and hearts.

Bodie began her writing career as a teen journalist for her local newspaper. Eventually her byline appeared in prestigious periodicals such as U.S. News and World Report, The American West, and The Saturday Evening Post. She also worked for John Wayne’s Batjac Productions (she’s best known as author of The Fall Guy) and ABC Circle Films as a writer and researcher. John Wayne described her as “a writer with talent that captures the people and the times!” She has degrees in journalism and communications.

Brock has often been described by Bodie as “an essential half of this writing team.” With degrees in both history and education, Brock has, in his role as researcher and story-line consultant, added the vital dimension of historical accuracy. Due to such careful research, The Zion Covenant and The Zion Chronicles series are recognized by the American Library Association, as well as Zionist libraries around the world, as classic historical novels and are used to teach history in college classrooms.

Bodie and Brock have four grown children—Rachel, Jake, Luke, and Ellie—and seven grandchildren. Their sons, Jake and Luke, are carrying on the Thoene family talent as the next generation of writers, and Luke produces the Thoene audiobooks.

Bodie and Brock divide their time between London and Nevada.

ABOUT THE BOOK

As Nazi forces tighten the noose, Loralei Kepler, daughter of a German resistance leader, must flee her beloved Germany. But is any place safe from Adolf Hitler's evil grasp? Loralei's harrowing flight leads her into the arms of needy child refugees, who have sacrificed everything in exchange for their lives, and toward a mysterious figure, who closely guards an age-old secret.

Explore the romance, the passion, and the danger of the most anticipated series of the last twenty years.

Born from the highly acclaimed and best-loved novels of three generations of readers -- The Zion Covenant series and The Zion Chronicles series -- Zion Diaries ventures into the lives of the inspiring and intriguing characters who loved intensely, stood up for what was right, and fought boldly during Hitler's rise to power and the dark days of World War II.

"When The Devil Whistles" Book Review

WHEN THE DEVIL WHISTLES
BY
RICK ACKER

Professional whistle-blower Allie Whitman and gifted litigator Connor Norman work together filing lawsuits---and collecting a generous salary when defendants settle. But when one of their targets turns the tables and comes after Allie, can the two partners win against a shadowy company that has secrets darker than just padded bills? 400 pages, softcover from Abingdon.

MY REVIEW:
I just finished the most interesting book, "When The Devil Whistles" by Rick Acker. I read his previous book, "Blood Brothers" and just loved it, now with The Devil he has gone to a whole different direction and I like it. He takes us inside the world of whistle blowers who uncover contractors defrauding the government on contracts. They sue the contractors and then the Department of Justice steps in and goes after them and the whistle blower then gets a cut of the settlement. Very interesting and then Rick throws in some possible romance, international espionage, nuclear warheads and things really start to heat up. I love the fact that the characters are not perfect, even the Connor who is the Christian makes mistakes and doesn't always act like he should. Allie makes more than her share of mistakes and there are consequences - lots of them. Rick has a style that is engaging and full of energy - the subject matter was so unique that I couldn't put this book down until I finished. Excellent. Put this one on your list to get when it comes out in October!

Thanks to Rick for having Abingdon send me a review copy. This book is available through Abingdon Press October 1, 2010.

Twilight's Serenade
Bethany House (August 1, 2010)

by
Tracie Peterson

MY REVIEW:

Tracie Peterson is a master of historical fiction and this book is a great addition to her library of writing. I read the first book in this series and somehow missed the second book, I was pleased to see that the third book isn't reliant on the previous books but can stand on its on feet if necessary. Much time has passed since the first book, the infant in book one is now a dad with children of his own. Now his younger sister is the main character in this book and she is returning home after being gone on tour with her violin for years. She is trying to figure out what she wants for her future when her future lands in her lap. Can she really reconcile her past with her present and her future. Can it really involve Yuri and his girls or when she fell in love with him at age 7 was it just a crush.

I really liked the conclusion to this series and I thank Tracie Peterson for renewing my faith in historical romance. She is a true master.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

In December, 1995 she signed a contract with Bethany House Publishers to co-write a series with author Judith Pella. Tracie now writes exclusively for Bethany House Publishers.

She teaches writing workshops at a variety of conferences on subjects such as inspirational romance and historical research.

"The Bishop" Book Review

THE BISHOP
BY
STEVEN JAMES

FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers's cutting-edge 21st-century geospatial investigative techniques and impeccable logic have helped him track some of the country's most grisly killers. But those skills are pushed to the limit in this new installment of the highly-acclaimed, award-winning The Bowers Files series. This time it's a congressman's daughter who is found dead even as her killers launch a spree of perfect murders in the Northeast. With nothing to link the crimes to each other, Agent Bowers faces his most difficult case yet--even as his personal life begins to crumble around him.

The Bishop is now available through Revell publishing.
Special thanks to Donna Hausler and Revell for my review copy of this book.

MY REVIEW:
I was blown away last year when I read THE KNIGHT by Steven James and have been looking forward this book since then. Of course by the time I started reading it I had read over 200 other books so I was a little hazy on the details. Not to worry, Steven does a great job of bringing it all right back and more. I suddenly remembered why I loved the THE KNIGHT so much - Steven James is a brilliant writer! His characters explode off the page while his storylines are unbelievably believable and the suspense and tension in the books are amazingly gripping. I settled in for this really long book to take me all weekend - I finished it in a 24 hour time frame, I couldn't put it down. His books are not for the faint hearted, there is a distinct Ted Dekker feel to some of the more descriptive scenes, while his subject matter can be very intellectual, in this book there is a lot on primate research and stuff like that. I was thoroughly engrossed in this book from start to finish and was sorry to see it finish. The good news, there will be more Patrick Bowers. The bad news, not until 2011.

MY REVIEW:
My daughter and I have been waiting for this book! Third in a YA suspense series, we couldn't wait to see where this book was going to take us. My daughter snatched it up as soon as I opened it and I had to wait my turn... it was worth it! This book starts about a year after the last one ended and there is going to be a wedding, except there is a kidnapping instead and then a cross country chase and close calls and excitement and I read it in one sitting! So good! This whole series is just a great intro into the thrilling world of suspense for YA. I highly recommend all three of them.

MY REVIEW:
I love this YA series by Kim Sawyer that offers insight into a teenage Mennonite girl that enters a public high school. What I love even more is that my almost 14 year old daughter loves this series. It is giving her an eye opener into another culture and outside her usual social circles. In this book Katy is still a sweet girl whose world is turning upside down as her father decides she needs a mother and starts courting a nice lady. To Katy it doesn't matter how nice she is or isn't, her goal becomes proving to her dad that they don't need a woman around because she can handle it all herself. She gets a little underhanded at points, but does she really know what she wants? A great second book in the series by Kim Sawyer.
